The “30 Day” Challenge

a calendar month with trees in the background

We all have health and wellness goals we want to achieve. However, we live in a world that can be incredibly overwhelming with all the media exposure, telling us what to do, what not to do, the “perfect” routine, etc.

It’s not wonder why living healthy seems like too much work! How do we know who to believe? Luckily, there are strategies out there that make becoming a healthier you much more manageable, a big one being the “30 day” challenge.

What is it?

Popularized and discussed by Ted Talker, Matt Cutts, this challenge entails picking a particular habit, any behavior you want to improve or try in your life. You then commit to carrying out this behavior every day for the next 30 days. The whole underlying purpose here is to construct new habits by simply taking one at a time and directing our attention to that, rather than trying to change several different things at once, an overwhelming and impossible task!

Key Benefits

1: Reduced Stress & Overwhelm

  • When looking at a 30-day window, it comes across as much more manageable. Thus, you are more likely to stay motivated and stick with it

2: Healthy Habit Formation

  • It may not be easy at first, but when the month is up, you’ll now have built a new lifestyle habit that can now be a cemented part of your lifestyle, something you hardly have to even think about!

3: Enduring Discomfort

  • As humans, discomfort doesn’t feel good, so we naturally avoid it. Engaging in these 30-day changes pushes us into an healthy, unfamiliar territory, one where we can expand our knowledge but at the same time, not feel panicked! We need distress in our lives to become better versions of ourselves, and this method gives the chance to control and “pick your own” discomfort, if you will.

Getting Started…

As was mentioned earlier, there is no “right” behavior to choose. It can be any positive behavior that YOU want to pick. Here are some ideas to get you started…

  • Physical:
    • Going for walks and reaching a step goal
  • Mental:
    • Replacing some of that TV time with reading
  • Social:
    • Sending a positive text to someone daily

Your options are limitless, and after being introduced to this concept, it completely transformed the way I view behavior change. As humans, it is our natural tendency to want to stay in our comfort zone, right where we are. Unfortunately, in order to grow and learn, we must push ourselves to escape this zone on a regular basis, and this 30-day tactic makes doing so much more attainable.

So, what behavior is next in line for you?

It’s time to get out there and start taking steps to a better you! Go raise the rouf of your health!
