The Common Mistake
As humans, we’re naturally wired to focus on the positives… thinking good about ourselves. When it comes to our everyday choices and how they shape our overall health, we have a tendency to include only the choices we want to count. The problem with this is that even the poor choices that are made contribute to our well-being, and bypassing them will only cause us to remain stuck.
The Reality
Here’s the truth. Every single decision that we make in life either gets us better or gets us worse, closer or further from the best person we can be! The person we are right now is quite literally the sum of all of our choices, and the choices we make in the future have the capacity to either fuel growth or prevent it.
You can think of it as a balance scale. Every healthy choice we make adds weight to the positive side, helping us improve ourselves. Every poor choice, even the ones we don’t always think or want to include, adds weight to the negative side, leaving us stuck where we are.
Bringing this into your Life
Now, this can be a tough thing to accept, but it sheds light on a very important point. You don’t have to be perfect. We make thousands of choices each day, and just like no one choice is going to give you everything you want, no one choice is going to take everything away. What matters most is the majority… being consistent.
When you make healthy choices most of the time, it’s okay to have those times when you enjoy yourself, because the balance will still be heavily weighted towards self-growth! Is there some choices that carry more weight than others? Absolutely. Are However, the general principle of making the healthy choices most of the time still holds! Are there things in life that we can’t control. You bet! But, there is also one thing we always do have control over… ourselves. No matter what happens, we always have the ability to control our thoughts, emotions, and decisions!
So, don’t be so hard on yourself. Don’t feel guilty when you make a poor decision. Work to be more mindful of your everyday choices, and be confident that as long as you engage in healthy habits most of the time, you will still grow over time. You don’t need to be perfect. You need to be consistent, and it all comes back to winning one day at a time. Thinking about today only, you’ll likely make “negative” choices. We all do. No one’s perfect. It’s human nature. Don’t sweat it. Focus on overpowering those choices with positive ones that push you to raise the rouf on your health and become a better version of you! One choice at a time, you can become stronger!
