Introduction
Everywhere you look, there’s a new “best workout regime,” that’s guaranteed to get you into the best health of your life. We’ve all seem them. Things like…
“Do this workout and watch your belly fat disappear.”
“Do this exercise to eliminate your back pain forever.”
I’m sure you can relate to these. Things like this are all over. The problem is that with so many complex routines and “best” options, it’s impossible to know which one to actually do, especially because everyone’s body is different. The program that works for one person may be completely different for someone else. There is no one size fits all approach to any aspect of health, exercise being one of those categories. So, I encourage you to use caution when you see any video that generalizes some workout or exercise routine that is “guaranteed” to work for you. All this said, because videos as these are all over the internet, most people pick a program that doesn’t suit their life, isn’t sustainable for them, or even worse, they simply don’t even start exercising at all! This is not what we want!
Here’s the reality. Most people, striving for general health do not need a strict, insane workout routine, especially when first starting out. It’s just overwhelming, extra, and unnecessary stress that only decreases a person’s likelihood of actually following through and committing to behavior change. Let me simplify things for you!
Walking = Foundation!
Both for people who exercise regularly and people who may be just getting started, there should be one overarching foundational focus. Steps!
Much research shows daily stepping to be a very effective activity in reducing all cause mortality, and at the end of the day, that’s the goal for the vast majority of individuals. To stay healthy and disease-free for as many years as possible! Now, I’m not going to say that higher intensity cardio and strength training aren’t important, because they have their place in optimizing our health too! However, focusing on one thing at a time, and becoming consistent with your stepping first should be the initial focus before taking on additional components.
The true power of walking comes in it’s simplicity and ability to be performed anywhere! Even if you can’t get outside, even walking around the house can do the trick! You also don’t need any equipment, unless of course, you’re wanting to invest in a fitness wearable to track your steps, but that’s totally up to you!
Ideally, the golden value to work towards is about 10,000 steps each day. Obviously, if you’re just starting out, start lower around 6,000 steps to avoid overdoing it too quickly. It’s crucial to start at the level you’re currently at and work forward from there. It always comes back to winning the day, taking small strides forward, and stacking those days into weeks into months into years, raising the rouf of your health every step of the way!
Wrapping Up
Here’s the main thing I want to you takeaway from this post. You don’t need this complex workout regime to achieve the goals you set for yourself. There are specific populations to which certain training may be necessary, but for the vast majority of people simply wishing to improve their general health and lose weight, such complex training protocols and exercises are usually not necessary! Instead, rely on the simple things like daily walking and racking up those steps, something that it much more sustainable and adaptable to all different types of lifestyles! While there are other additions that can be implemented into your regime along the way, master your steps first!
As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or comments, and share the post with anyone else you feel it can serve in a positive way!
Now get stepping, win the day, and continue to work towards a better and healthier you with each step you take! {both literally and metaphorically!}
